I stepped into 2025 with work piled up to my neck like a Lagos hawker's wares. There wasn't any 'Detty December' or vacation for me - just burnout and the weird satisfaction of being "busy." Fast forward to March, and I was knee-deep in debt, staring at my school fees like "God abeg, we need to talk."
Now it's May, and guess what? I'm fully pivoting into tech - going from technical writer to Product Manager and Quality Assurance Engineer overnight. Omo, life no balance at all. But here's how I'm (barely) surviving the chaos.
1. The "Balance" Lie We All Believe
They make "work-life balance" sound as achievable as finding a quiet day in Lagos. Meanwhile:
Your 9-5 morphs into a 5-9 without consent
Your side hustle demands attention like a Lagos landlord
Your bank account screams "Abeg, fund me!" like a Nollywood damsel
Your family thinks you’ve joined a cult (you’re just busy)
Truth: Balance is a scam. Aim for "controlled chaos" instead.
2. My "Fake It Till You Make It" System
Here’s my slightly functional formula:
The 80/20 Hustle
Focus on the 20% of tasks that yield 80% results. Example: Instead of writing 10 mediocre articles, write 2 viral ones that get you job offers.
The "Strategic Neglect" Method
Let some things fail on purpose (sorry, Auntie’s forwarded prayers).
Protect your peace like it’s the last bottle of chilled Coke at a party.
The Power of "No"
"Can you do this for exposure?" → "My rent doesn’t accept exposure, sir."
"When are you settling down?" → "When Nigeria’s economy settles first." (mic drop)
3. Pivoting Like a Lagos Danfo Driver
How I switched careers mid-crisis:
Repurpose your skills (Turns out technical writing is just PM documentation in disguise).
Learn like your life depends on it (YouTube + begging devs for coffee chats).
Walk into rooms like you belong (Even if you Googled "What’s a sprint?" 5 mins prior).
4. Survival Kit for the Unbalanced Life
Okpa and chilled Coke (The ultimate "I need joy NOW" combo).
A "Delulu is the Solulu" mindset (If you don’t believe in yourself, who will?).
One non-negotiable break (Mine is 6 hours of sleep—no apologies).
Life no balance, but we move. Whether you’re career-pivoting, drowning in deadlines, or just trying to remember what fun feels like—welcome to the struggle squad.
